What if marriage isn’t God’s Plan for you? (Part 2)

Finding Peace and Purpose in the Waiting

As a reminder, in Part 1 of this blog series, you walked in these truths:

  • It’s okay to desire to marry. the desire to marry is a natural desire that reflects your beautiful design.
  • Your life rests in God’s hands. “In him {you} live and move and have {your} being” (Acts 17:28).
  • God wrote your life story with intentionality and care. God wonderfully wove you into being as His image-bearer, full of God-praising purpose, dignity, and value.

Your life story is part of God’s BIGGER Story.

(God speaking) I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” -Revelation 1:8

God wrote a BIGGER Story about His Glory and His redemptive Plan for His people. He began the BIG Story with the creation of the world and creation purposefully praising Him. At world’s end, He will continue to exist throughout eternity. Those who believe in His Son, Jesus, will live with Him and praise Him forever—their powerful purpose fulfilled. God’s Plan includes a wedding supper for Jesus and His followers from every nation—the kick-off of living happily ever after with Him! (See Revelation 19:6-9.)

Do you believe in Jesus? If yes, then…

You are called to walk with Jesus in the BIG Story.

In the beginning, God walked with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:8-9). Instead of embracing and following His Perfect Plan, His people sinned against Him, damaging our present and future, our relationship with Him, and our God-praising purpose.

He watched over His People as they walked in the wilderness of their wandering ways. Through the prophet Isaiah, He told the Israelites, “For your Maker is your husband—the Lord Almighty is his name—the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth” (Isaiah 54:5/NIV).

God’s Plan sent His Beloved Son to walk with us, redeem our relationship with God, and restore our God-praising purpose. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

It is God’s Plan for Jesus to walk us home to our Heavenly Father. “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God’” (Revelation 21:3/NIV).

Until the end, God calls us to make Him known as we walk in the world. “And he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation’” (Mark 16:15).

If God’s Plan is for you to have an earthly husband, then you will also be called, with your husband, to carry out God’s marital vision of reflecting Christ’s love for His Bride (the Church) to the world.

If God’s Plan means you are currently single, then it also means God receives the most glory in this moment of time through you as a single woman rather than as a married woman.

In the BIG Story, love comes from God.

God is the source of love. “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19). Only God has the ability to create true love. No matter how hard you try, you cannot create true, lasting love with a man. There is nothing you can do to bring love and marriage to yourself with a faster timeline than what God has planned. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

If you know Christ, then you know the truest love. He loved you so much that He laid down His life for you.

Though you may not know if it’s God’s Plan for you to marry, you can have assurance through Jesus that you are loved in the truest way possible on earth! You are loved more than you could ever hope or imagine!

Dear God,

I praise You for You are the Alpha and Omega, Sovereign Creator, the Master Storywriter, and Love’s Source.

“{Your} ways are higher than {my} ways ” (Isaiah 55:9). The best plan for me is Your Plan. I desire to marry, and ask You to grant me a godly husband and a marriage that glorifies you and reflects Christ’s love for His Bride, the Church. Ultimately, I surrender myself to Your Plan.

In my singleness, remind me of what You’ve given me through Christ:

My Promising Perspective: My story is part of Your BIG Story, and my life rests in His hands. Single or married, I’m waiting on something much BIGGER and better than anything on earth—eternity with You! In the midst of the wait, I have what matters most—relationship with Jesus!

My Powerful Purpose: Singleness does not define my worth.  I have a powerful purpose. Single or married, I’m Your image-bearer, full of dignity and value. I was purposefully made to praise You and to make You known to others.

My Profound Peace: I never walk alone. Jesus walks with me from this moment into eternity. I embrace the truth of Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

God, teach me to walk in step with Jesus, to wait well for Your Plan’s unveiling, and to sing Your praises all along the way! In the loving name of Jesus, Amen.
